Sclerotherapy (treatment of varices)
Sclerotherapy is a form of treatment by which a doctor injects a medicinal substance in the blood vessels (or in the lymphatic vessels), and this injection causes them to decrease. Sclerotherapy is commonly used for the treatment of varices or the so-called veins in spiderweb.
The method consists in the use of an irritant solution, also called the sclerosing substance that is injected directly into the dilated vessel. This solution irritates the vessel, causing the obstruction and subsequent disappearance.
This procedure is indicated in the following cases:
- Telangiectasias (dilatations of small blood vessels)
- Reticular veins (that have the aspect of a network)
- Isolated varices
- Recurrent varices
- Varices located under knee
- Varices < 5 mm.
Contraindicated to persons such as:
- pregnant women
- those suffering from occlusive arterial disease (arterial blood circulation is blocked)
- those with acute thrombophlebitis
Advantages of procedure:
- Technique of sclerotherapy allows the radical treatment of varicose disease.
- Method does not involve the recourse to scalpel.
- Procedure can be performed under ambulatory conditions, and the beneficial effects are visible immediately.
Postoperative recommendations:
The patients should wear the compression socks for a period of 1-3 weeks after the treatment, at the same time being recommended also the interruption of sports activities for a few days.
